Solent Martial arts Ground Fighting Course

July 25th, 2010

solent martial arts gosport and farehamground fighting course

we held our last master class before the summer holidays, this one was on ground fighting for sport jujitsu and MMA, The seminar was with sensei Rogers And was for 4 1/2 hours, covering takedowns, the guard, escapes from guard, defences against some one escaping from guard moving into locks chocks etc, escapes from side control, reversals escape from arm bars, all with gi’s on and no gi, it was hard work and interesting but a fun filled 4 hours, and we had a very good turn considering many are away on holiday 35 in total,

solent martial arts academies ground fighting course solent martial arts academies gosport and fareham ground fighting course

ground fighting course gosport and fareham solent martial arts

sensei had us repeating the moves over and over drilling them in as he puts it, then having to fight for it and go for a submission, then he would move us on to the next technique, and when he shows us it he always says if your going for this and it fails you can always move into this and it would just flow, and it would be the last move he had shown us

Then at the end sensei had us all ground fighting with out the gi’s on to make it harder we were doing 3 X 5 min rounds on the ground, with one opponent and when the time was up, he would have go with another opponent,

Boy was it hard work, but so so much fun, sensei has a real nak of doing that, he works you real real hard and when you think you have given everything he always seem to be able to get that little more out of you, but no matter how hard he works you its always fun and interesting, and you always walk away from a session with sensei feeling that you have achieved something and you always feel good about yourself,

And that’s one of the things sensei always says in a competition win or lose if you walk away knowing in yourself that you gave all you had and a little more 110% + you will always be happy with your self and that’s most important being happy with yourself knowing in your heart that you gave it your best and more,

great day sensei more more of this sort of training please we love it

Solent Martial arts held its third quarterly grading at the Crofton community centre in Stubbington Fareham

We had to make some changes to this grading as our last one was so big we had hardly any room in the Crofton sports hall but we coped with it ok, but this time we had to have a separate time slot for our Lil Warriors, which worked very well, and i think they enjoyed it a lot more,

we had over 160 on the main grading, and due to the changes we put in place as with the lil warriors, it ran like clock work, we worked on a rotation system, one mat covering syllabus test mat, ground fighting kumite mat, and a pad and shield and stamina testing mat, all our students really enjoy this system test them all round, and everyone puts in such a great effort on these test its a pleasure to watch, and we have some very good jujitsuka’s coming up though our ranks i am looking forward to some very good black belt grading in the future, our standards continue to rise

we had many new entrants this year, there first taste of sports jujitsu in competition, and i must say they all fought very well with not one being knocked out of the competition in the early rounds, and all enjoyed it immensely and cant wait for the next competition, i am proud of you all for your efforts and sportsmanship,

we done extremely well this year taking 17 medals in total and five titles,

The Competition was very hard this year with over 1065 entries and each  division was twice as big as last year, so we had to fight a lot harder to get into each final, with not only this to contend the standard has risen dramatically each year, and this year was no exception, but we have put a lot of training over the last year and introduced squad training sessions which seem to have paid of, last year we won 8 medals this year we got 17,

winning Medals in the Super heavyweight Division ground Fighting and Kumite, Pairs Jujitsu Demonstration Adult’s Children open hand Kata, and weapons kata and also in many of the other divisions

it was a great effort by all

after a hard fought day it was quickly back to the hotel for the gala dinner celebrations, the hotel this year was brilliant the food was good so a great weekend was had by all

Solent Martial Arts Academies Competitors Fly the Flag For The United Kingdom at the J.J.I.F Int European Jujitsu Championships

April 19th, 2010

The Competiton arena Paris Judo Institute Solent Martial Arts Academies Fly the Flag for UK

Just over a Month ago 4 Competitors from the Gosport Fareham Based, Budokan Solent Martial Arts Academies, were asked to Compete for the United Kingdom at the JJIF European Jujitsu Championships by the governing bodies Sports Jujitsu Technical chairman and Sensei Rogers From Gosport to be the Team Coach and UK Delegate,  there were twenty nations taking part at this event at the French Paris Institute of Judo and Jujitsu,

So on Friday 16th April we all left Portsmouth by ferry and got the train in Cherbourg to Paris, we had to be there before  18:00 for the weigh in, we had a good easy trip so that was good, we got there nice and fresh and settled in to our rooms staying at the Institute of Judo,

Saturday was a big day with the opening ceremony all the countries marching in and lining  up we all felt so Proud being there for the UK,

and being there and watching them fight and the standard of performance they were putting up, they had more than every right to be there, there performance was world class and they made me feel so proud the be there coach and Sensei, and i was Honoured to be there with them,

and the JJIF President himself said they were good fighter and done so well at there first event at this standard so well well done lads

Grading Master Class – March 2010

March 29th, 2010

A fantastic kick at the striking drills station

Another month has passed and a testament to all the hard work that has been put into the class was the grading held at the Crofton community centre on the 28th March. Sensei is pleased to report that 100% of the invited students passed their grading (including all the little warriors who remained focussed for the entire 4 hours – a long time for those 4 years old).

Everyone’s enthusiasm for jujitsu shone brightly as they endured some physically demanding tasks without one thought of giving up. This master class also showed how keen our students are at the sport jujitsu formats; some didn’t expect to like the sport jujitsu at first, now they think it’s great.

The students await their fate :P Sensei fine-tuning some techniques.

Everybody deserves the grade they earned at this master class. Including a number of new white belt students who earned their first belt under Sensei Rogers with admirable determination. Three of our little warriors earned themselves a black stripe belt; a new belt to replace the many coloured belts (which made the little warrior ranks confusing).

Hopefully, the next grading will be as fruitful as this one. With the ongoing support from our black-belts (I believe we had a record number of black-belts help out with this grading, certainly lots of knowledge and experience to spare). With this continued support, we can expect to see our standard of jujitsu increase evermore. As always, most of the pictures I took can be found on my Flickr page.

Kobudo: February Master Class

March 2nd, 2010

Sensei throws Michael with a jo staff

I thought it was about time I wrote something on here as I have been too quiet for too long; so I will take the burden off Sensei to write up the happenings on Sunday 28th February 2010 where a Kobudo master class was held at the Crofton Community Centre in Stubbington.

The class started at 12:30pm with everyone practising level 4 (the second level) techniques with the jo staff for 2 enjoyable hours. After the break, the room was divided into the level 4 and 5 where the weapons katas (with basic applications) were covered.

Adults going through the 8 cut kata Sensei slaughter enjoying the pain

Needless to say, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a great deal more than that is required for their syllabus. The real test of how interesting a 4 hour master class can be determined from the children; they were focussed for the entire class, showing that their attention was not lost through the course of the day. This aided the class to run smoothly and with no injuries, despite the wooden sticks being used everywhere.

Mike and Sue practising a jo staff defense

Great thanks to Sensei for running, as always, a fantastic class. I learnt so much, which will definitely help with my 2nd dan studies. Photos can be found on my Flickr page.

What a terrific start to 2010 we all made our way up to Walsall University Sport England training centre on Friday 12th Feb, as the Competition was to start at 09:30am sharp on the Saturday, this year was very hard the standard has over the last couple of years gone up and up, there was a 100 more entries this year so the battle was on from the start, but our small but determined team again fought like true warriors, with 8 out of our 10 entries battling into the Finals, all had made it through the early rounds but a couple just missed getting into the finals but put up a tremendous fights,

but it was a shame that not all our team was able to make it,

we have done so well in the sport jujitsu over the last couple of years from a club that never competed to entering a competition to see how we could do and just getting one lucky bronze,

to a club that last year pulled 30 medals and produced 8 National and international champions, and we have again made a dominant start to 2010, well well done to all that took part,
